Tool of Native Spirituality: the Medicine Wheel

Thank author of this post/commentTool of Native Spirituality: the Medicine Wheel

Before European settlers came to North America, the indigenous Native American tribes had erected about 20, 000 medicine wheels across the continent. Building a medicine wheel creates a special energy source that can be utilized for healing, balance, intuitive understanding and self-discovery. Also known as the sacred hoop, the specifics of the medicine wheel vary by tribe, but the basic concept behind it is universal.

The reason the medicine wheel is so foundational to native spirituality is because the construction of a medicine wheel creates sacred space. Native Americans consider it to be an entrance to the spirit world that functions to link them to it, where positive power is invoked with honor and respect for the benefit of all. The stones that make up a medicine wheel are laid out in a circle that is intersected by two lines, creating four sections, and each stone has a symbolic meaning. The stones facing the East represent birth and new beginnings, the South stones indicate trust, protection and nurturing, the West stones symbolize introspection and mystery, and stones in the North mean wisdom and respect. The four sections that make up the medicine wheel show each of the year’s seasons, and the very center of the wheel is the opening to Divine Source, a portal of cosmic connection.

Common elements to building your own medicine wheel are clearing the area you are using of any negativity, creating the circle, calling on the power of the elements of earth, air, fire and water and positive spirit guides respectfully in a sacred manner, raising and sending out the healing power you generate in the wheel, then closing the circle when you are finished. This is a general guideline, and you may follow these basic steps creatively and in whatever way that is right for you, as long as you do them with a pure heart filled with gratitude and reverence. If you ask with respect and permission, you can call on the four directions, the elements and your spirit guides to assist you in manifesting your intentions and goals for yourself and for others. The most important thing to keep in mind is make sure that everything you do in your medicine wheel is positively affirming and for the highest good of all. May you be blessed as you enhance your spiritual life with the ancient and powerful medicine wheel!
