Starting a paranormal investigation/elimination service. Any advice?

Recently, I've witnessed and heard tell of a large amount of supernatural activity happening all around me and have decided to begin an amateur career of paranormal investigations (or possibly, eliminations). I've always found the paranormal interesting, and have found the prospect of interacting with the spiritual realm MOST intriguing. However, I'm not quite sure how to approach a better understanding of the supernatural, or, more importantly, how to protect myself in confrontations with more dangerous phenomenon, outside the obvious things like blessings and learning how to perform exorcisms. So...what's some good advice?
